Indoor Delivery Robots

LONDON

How It All Started

I joined Swift as a fresher in User Interface and Experience Design. Swift is a startup based in London that works with robotics and develops tech solutions. I worked asynchronously with a diverse team from around the world.

My primary role was to understand the user journey and optimize their experience accordingly.

The robotics department was entirely new to me, which made the experience both challenging and exciting. With guidance from Michal, I designed an app to be integrated with the robot functions.

As it is a startup, I took on various roles, which significantly influenced the way I approached design. This experience opened my eyes to the multiple aspects that need to be considered for a product to be successful.

BENEFITS OF A ROBOT

  • Customer places an order on the Swift mobile application.

  • Shop receives the order on the provided tablet.

  • Robot delivers the package to the customer.

  • Robots also deliver packages from shops to a hub near the exit, from where they are further delivered to customers' homes.

Behind The Screen

I typically worked independently on assigned tasks and then discussed my progress with the rest of the team. This approach allowed me to analyze competitors and draw inspiration before diving into design creation. My process was highly iterative, involving user observation and rebranding efforts for Swift.

Process

1

1. Team Spirit & Async Work: Even though I worked on tasks individually, I always made sure to discuss ideas with the team. These collaborations helped me improve my designs and enhance the user experience. Despite being in different time zones, our team spread across different parts of the world, worked harmoniously.

2. Compassion and Support: I learned that being understanding and appreciative of everyone's contributions leads to better results and fosters a positive work environment.

3. Understanding Real-Life Users: While university projects taught me to create user personas, real-life users often present different needs and challenges. I realized how crucial it is to recognize and address these unexpected requirements.

4. Business Insight: Gaining a deeper understanding of what makes a product successful in the market was invaluable.

5. Working in a Fast-Paced Environment: I adapted to the fast-paced nature of the startup environment, learning to stay flexible and efficient.

My Learnings

3

Quick Iterations: One of the main challenges was adapting and refining designs rapidly to meet user needs. Balancing Usability & Aesthetics: Initially, my focus was on making designs visually appealing, but I quickly learned the importance of balancing aesthetics with usability.
